5 Face Shapes and Their Meaning in Five Element Reading

Face Shapes & The Five Elements: Which One Are You?

If you have intention but no outward appearance, outward appearance will arise from your intention; if you have outward appearance but no intention, outward appearance will perish with your intention.

How the Five Elements Classify Face Shapes

In ancient Chinese divination, all things in the universe are classified into the Five Elements. Humans and all things in nature share the same origin, so each person’s physical form and temperament can also be divided into five types: metal, wood, water, fire, and earth. Based on the characteristics of each person’s Five Elements and their destiny, physiognomy classifies people into five types according to their appearance: metal type, wood type, water type, fire type, and earth type. Once the overall type is clear, our complete face reading chart shows how a face is divided further into the Three Courts, the Five Sacred Mountains and the twelve palaces.

Which Five Element Face Shape Are You?

The Metal Type

A person with a Metal type face has a square face, straight ears, delicate features, well-proportioned lips and teeth, small hands, a round waist, and fair skin. A Metal type person with a clear, metallic voice is destined for great wealth and status. If a Metal type person doesn’t possess all the characteristics of a Metal type person, but rather has other traits mixed in, they will only achieve minor wealth and status.

People with a Metal element in their birth chart should avoid having a bright red complexion, as red represents fire, and fire can destroy metal. Therefore, a bright red complexion in a Metal person is considered unlucky, as it symbolizes earth burying metal. Such a person will likely experience hardship. A bright red complexion on the tip of the nose and the three yang areas (the area between the eyebrows) in a Metal person indicates impending misfortune. In mild cases, it may lead to the ruin of the family business; in severe cases, it may result in death. Metal people should also avoid having physical characteristics of people with a Fire element in their birth chart.

The Wood Type

A Wood-type person has a straight, slender body, clear eyes, a wide mouth, and a bright, spirited appearance. A Wood-type person with a crooked, stunted, and short body, and a hoarse voice, is considered unlucky. A Wood-type person with a round waist and a straight body will become a pillar of society. A Wood-type person with a crooked body and a hunched back is considered a petty person. A Wood-type person with prominent veins and bones will find it difficult to achieve success even with hard work.

A person with a Wood-type constitution who possesses physical characteristics of a Fire-type constitution is said to have “Wood and Fire in Harmony,” which is auspicious. A person with a Wood-type constitution who possesses physical characteristics of an Earth-type or Metal-type constitution is considered inauspicious. If they possess a small amount of Metal, they can still achieve their aspirations for fame and success. However, if the Wood element is very weak while the Metal element is very strong, it is unfavorable, indicating a life of many successes and failures. Physiognomy books say, “A person with a Wood-type constitution who is slender, tall, angular, and imposing, with clear and handsome features, has the potential to become a pillar of society.”

The Water Type

Water-type people have straight bones, firm muscles, a dark complexion, smooth and glossy skin, a round face, and appear to lean forward when viewed from behind and backward when viewed from the front. They have a large abdomen and square hips. Water-type people have heavy breathing, a dull complexion, skin as white as powder, and loose, flabby muscles, which is considered an ominous sign. Water-type people with few bones and much flabby flesh are destined for early death. Water-type people with no beard and smooth skin will not have sons. Water-type people with cold, icy muscles will also not have sons. Physiognomy books say, “Water-type people with large eyes, thick eyebrows, a round waist, and rounded shoulders will enjoy a life of wealth and honor.”

The Fire Type

People with a “fire” type constitution have a pointed upper body and a broad lower body. They are impatient, have sparse facial hair, a reddish complexion, and a high-bridged nose. A stagnant complexion is considered unlucky for those with a fire type constitution. A bright, lustrous complexion, sparse facial hair, a small mouth, and a small abdomen are considered auspicious. Fire type people who become officials often hold military or law enforcement positions. They generally don’t become extremely wealthy; their wealth rarely exceeds a hundred taels of gold. Tall fire type people are more likely to have sons. The physiognomy book says, “A pointed upper body, a dark complexion, and sparse facial hair are characteristics of a fire type person.”

The Earth Type

People with an Earth-type constitution tend to be plump, with thick muscles, a full face, a high back, dark skin, a loud voice like thunder, a short neck, and a round head. Physiognomy books say, “Earth-type people are upright, kind, loyal, and have a calm and steady demeanor. It’s difficult for others to guess their thoughts. Earth-type people are also particularly trustworthy in their words and deeds.”

What Modern Science Says About Face Shapes

Modern genetics has discovered that facial features are indeed related to gene expression; psychology has also confirmed that micro-expressions can reflect personality. Although the ancients did not understand DNA, they summarized many patterns through long-term observation. For example, “thick earlobes indicate longevity,” and modern research has confirmed that earlobe creases are related to coronary heart disease; “dark circles under the eyes often indicate kidney deficiency,” which corresponds to the modern medical theory of adrenal function.

This ancient art of judging people teaches us not only the skill of “judging by appearance,” but also the wisdom of understanding the harmonious coexistence of heaven, earth, and humanity.
